I found what looks like a fork lift fuel tank. Feels like it has some in it but has been behind an abandoned building FORVER. Would make a nice forge body. How can I make this safe to cut open on both ends?

I would stand back around 30 paces and shoot a hole in it. If it doesn't blow up you will be all set. :D
PS: Not in your backyard.

You need to figure out a way to open it up and let it bleed out. If there is a valve you can take a part or open, start with that. If not, there might be some kind of fitting you could just put a hose on with the other end open.
Of course, you'll want to do this out somewhere that its not going to hurt anything or be a hazard to have propane spraying around

If you decide to use IG's method I'd recommend being more like 100 paces away, and using at least a .223 FMJ :D

Personally I'd avoid it. Find a metal scrap yard and get a length of 10 - 12" pipe. Lot less trouble in the long run., not to mention safer.

I like IG's idea just for something to shoot at tho!

Act like it's the rarest of elements Lv. That's the atomic sysmblo for Leaverite. So just leaverite there.

You've tested your luck enough lately B-.

Use a freon tank or a small beer keg or somethin' safer :)

Mark's right, don't risk it. You still got a lot of Trackrock's left in you. Like to see you again with a hammer in one hand and hot steel in the other. You're a FOOSRK member, so "don't poke the Bear" bud!

Many fork lift tanks are aluminum, but if its steel....Open the valve and bleed off the contents.Remove the valve(s) and fill with water.Rinse out and drain. The propane is now gone.If you want to be super safe, drill several 1/2" holes in the area to be cut off,to provide venting.Cut with a torch or carbide cut off blade.Scrap yards are a good source for all kinds of heavy pipe of large diameter.

:D Well, consitering my luck and the fact that I have 2 small freon tanks I'll let the bomb lie. Though some may still like to know that I DO have a ful metal jacketed .223 Bushmaster that would do the job.

I'll have a hammer in hand sometime this year CREX. may be in the fall but I'l bet there one way or another!

Thanks for the help guys.

I hope so Brian. Makes me wince when I think about all the O-1 blades laying in tiny dust fragments on your shop floor!

Get that "Little Dragon" going. What kind of torches you got in mind? I've come up with a pretty simple design (thanks to some input from Mark) that is proving to work quite well in my latest forge. Only three parts and three alignment screws. Let me know if your interseted and I'll send you some pics and data.

send me the pics CREX. I saw marke blanketed burner a few weeks back and really liked it. What sort of burner design do you recomend? Can you send me size specs also? Pipe diameter and length? I need all the help I can get ;)

Try to get them out to you (both) by the coming weekend. You won't believe how easy they are to make.
