Propane Tank Regulator Question -

Anyone know if it is worth it to get the regulator replaced on a tank? My father gave me a large (looks larger than 40-gallon) propane tank, but it leaks propane around the threads when I open it up (actually, it comes out like an leaky compressor hose). Can I just take it in and get that fixed pretty cheap?

Thanks for any suggestions --

I'd take it to a welding supply place that fills bottles. (not one that just sells filled tanks)
They should have the expertise, and the parts needed.

I'm not sure I understand the question. But if you are asking if it is "worth it" to pay some money not to die in an explosion, my answer would be yes. But that's just me. :)

oh, I'm not using it (it was hooked up so I could try it out and see if there were leaks). Just didn't know if it would be costly to have the regulator replaced.

Michael are you sure its not the valve leaking. The treads on those valves get worn and then the end of the regulator won't seal properly. I also had a valve that would leak closed but not open, right up around the handle stem. You should be able to get a 100# bottle delivered. Thats what I do. I leased a 100# bottle for $20 from the local propane company, they will bring a full bottle and just exchange it when ever I call them. Cost is $55 for a full bottle exchange and I don't have to do anything but step to the phone and say "hey I need another bottle". LOL

Good luck,

Bill

It leaks where the arrow is, but only when I open it up. I'd like to get one of those 100# ones, but space is pretty limited. :D

I was at Lowe's yesterday and they had 100# propane tanks fo $79.99. So if it is going to cost you around that price, just get a new one.
