Proper lubing of a folder?

Can a folder be lubricated by just putting some drops of lube on the washer area surrounding the pivot pin and hoping that it works it's way in, or would a proper job of this require disassembly of the knife?

Disassembly should not be necessary unless some nasty grit has worked it's way into the pivot area. Just use a good lubricant and work the blade back and forth and the lubricant will work it's way in.

Say that if you switch lubes to try a new one; would then it be necessary to take the folder apart and start over with the new lubrication brand?

You're overthinking it.;)
I recommend RemOil or Breakfree.

Well Boink I think you know what I would do...................take that sucker APART!! I do so when it gets to feeling gritty as I open or close it. Most of the time it is just pocket "stuff" that has worked its way in. Now that I use Tuff-Glide though it doesn't seem to attract near the stuff other lubes did. I also will drop just a tiny bit on either side of the blade area where the washers are located and work it in by opening and closing the blade. Whenever I changed lubes completely I always took the knife down and cleaned it up good and then put the new stuff on, but as I said since going with T-G I haven't had to do this. A lot of times you can loosen the pivot screw and spay a degreaser in it, wash it out using hot water, and then take a hairdryer to finish the drying process. Relube, tighten, and you are set to go!

I did that with a Sabenza once and it took three tries to get it back together. When it was finally together, it looked like a different knife ;)

Actually, It came together OK in the end and the action was excellent. But that's a relatively easy knife to work on. Now, about the Crawford KFF ....
