Finally got around to replacing the old flattened PVC pipe version I made just to get out safely with it. My patented waxed leather in Kydex with peened aluminum rivets. The old one didn't do anything to protect the bit from rusting, so this is a big improvement in a bunch of ways. This is my current go-to for backpacking, canoeing etc. Only weighs half pound more than a 14" hatchet and chops so much better - is able to blast through seasoned beech up to about 8" or so, something none of my other choppers will do without a lot of expended energy.
Rounded the bottom corners on the poll so it's more comfortable to choke up on for making tent stakes and pot hangers etc. Other than thinning it out a little that's the only mod I've done. Might rehang it over the winter and keep the handle beefier the entire length, maybe not - if it ain't broke....
The mask actually has enough retention it doesn't need the cord - is just for added peace of mind. Canoeing/hiking 13th Lake and Peaked Mtn in Siamese Ponds Wilderness, Adks three weeks ago, view from one of the vlys on approach.
