I've tried calling around and asking various brick places for the 'soft' type fire brick, I usually get something like 'no, we don't have that' since they can't figure out what I want.
Is there a proper or well known trade name for this kind of brick?
thanks

Re-reading my post, I should have been a bit clearer, finding fireplace/refractory brick is easy - problem is it's the hard type. Finding the SOFT refractory brick is the problem. Explaining to the person that answers the phone never quite understands there are more than one type refractory bricks.

I got my soft bricks from a local furnace builders. I imagine they still get bussiness from the Shipyard down in Charleston
The guy there said soft firebrick was for insulation, while the hard brick was for direct contact with flame.
Ask for insulating firebrick.

i got my soft firebrick and first pieces of kaowool/inswool refractory blanket locally from a boiler install/service/repair company. It was the only place in town that knew what they were, everyone else just kinda looked at me like i was crazy and some even said they didnt think they existed. :D Last stuff i got, refractory blanket and satanite i got from Darren Ellis, a lot better prices and a heck of a nice guy.

I found my fire bricks and inswool at a local ceramic supply store. They had them for making kilns. I asked for a soft fire brick and they knew what it was.
