I have a freon tank propane forge and have recently aquired a thermometer to help in not overheating the metal during heat treat.
Anyone have any suggestions for the best place to poke the thermocouple in the forge?
Anywhere not in the flame?
Towards the front or back of the forge?
Thx

I have no advice.
But I have always wanted to know, do we seek to know how hot the blade is?, or just how hot some parts of the forge can get?

All the above. When annealing, heat treating or forge welding Damascus I want different temps or as close to as possible with a gas forge. Since I do all this outside I can't depend on the forge or steel colors as the light filtering into the work area is changing by the hour.

My buddy Bill Burke forges indoors so he rarely uses his thermocouple and can judge his heats by visual color. I also believe Ed fowler uses the same methods when he is forging.

what does a thermocouple look like?
How does it work?
and,
If you did place the thing right next to a blade in the forge, would that meen you would need a new one due to the heat of the forge effecting the thing as well as the blade?
