Proper Procedure for a Fake

Hypothetical question here. Let's say Jack bought a FFG Endura and the lock broke. Then he sent it in to Spyderco for warranty work, along with a receipt. Spyderco examines the knife, and although all markings are correct, as is the price, they determine the knife is a fake. Now, what's the protocol for this? Assuming Jack didn't know the Endura was a fake, what's the call?

If I were in Jack's position I would be doing a few things. First, if my knife were to be returned to me, I would try to send it back to where I bought it to get a refund and nrver buy there again. Next I would inform Spyderco of the website/store selling the fake. If I wasn't able to return that knife and still had it, I would use it a lot. A LOT. Or try modifications since it is not a real Spyderco and buy myself a new one. I would also be thankful it wasn't a Stryder. With that being said, that is not a reason to not be upset.

I'm pretty sure they would look into the matter. They would at least look at who is selling them to see what the next step would be. It it was one of their registered dealers there would be some sparks flying. I don't see that happening though. That's one of the reasons I always buy from real spyderco dealers, preferably developing a relationship with them as well establishing my honesty and credibility so if I say something that sounds outlandish on the surface, they believe me.

For me it's been one of the keys to getting good service and I'd bet one of the reasons I look lost everytime someone posts a complaint about quality issues and I have over a hundred that came with no issues.

AFAIK, there are no fake FFG Enduras. On the other hand, there are probably some FrankenSpyder Enduras with an FFG blade in a handle color Spyderco never produced. In that case, the warranty is void. Which is only fair, since the broken lock can be reasonably assumed to be the result of improper reassembly.

IF it is a fake, and to me that's a major if, what would you expect Spyderco to do? Personally, I can't see why they would have any responsibility to replace it.
