Proper section for "Services Wanted" topic?

I have some blade blanks that could use handles and final edge finishing, and am considering having someone else do the work. Where would be the proper place to start a topic such as that?

The target audience is most likely the guys in the "Tinkering" forum section, or maybe "Shop Talk" to reach beginner makers. But will a soliciting for services topic be allowed there? "Wanted to Buy"?

Or maybe start a topic in every forum section and see which one doesn't get locked? :D

Bob, you can post a query for recommendations in "Maintenance & Tinkering". I see such threads there regularly.

I'm curious if we don't need a "Knifemaker Wanted" forum.

If it happens and becomes a general Knifemaker/Materials/Services/etc. Wanted forum , a Sheathmaker subforum in it might be a good idea. We get a lot of those posts in S&S, and they usually go unanswered because most makers don't wanna feel like they're spamming or doing business in a discussion forum. Usually just ends up with a missed opportunity for the maker and a frustrated searcher.

Perhaps "Wanted: Knifemaker & Related Services" or something of the sort might be an all-encompassing umbrella. Just a thought.

That sounds like a really good idea. Lots of people want handle scales, sheaths, sharpening services, knife reblades, conversions, etc.

It seems like a good idea, on the surface. I can't really see any potential downsides?

I see one down side - there are hundreds of folks on this forum who can make and modify knives. Each thread could result in 100 or more replies. Every maker could reply to every thread.

It may be easier to start a forum where makers actively seeking work could make a post listing their skills and show a few pics. This would give those folks seeking this type of custom work to shop the makers easier and provide a forum for this type of salesmanship. The threads could run like a sales forum where the threads of makers no longer actively seeking work then drop to the bottom.

Forgot about this. Even though I support the idea, there is one downside. The mods would have to deal with non KM members replying or the ensuing reports by letting them do so. If it could be set up like the WTB forum where only those with KM or Dealer memberships could see the posts and reply, it might work without having to bend the rules or give the Supers a headache.

It's no problem setting it up like the WTB forums where anyone can start a thread, but only paid subscribers can respond.

Spark, since this would entail work at the knifemaker/service provider level, can you restrict such access to perhaps that user group as well as dealers?

That would prevent potential abuse by gold or platinum members who do not wish to pay for the service provider membership but whose business model would fit that category.

Of course :) Especially since we have expanded the Knifemaker's membership to cover all the other sections.

Ok, I opened up two new forums. One where users can solicit custom work, and one where Knifemaker level members can advertise their services. I tried to combine them, but there was no way to restrict the permissions appropriately, so I was forced to split them up.

The Custom Shop
Wanted: Knifemaker / Craftsman / Related Services

That's great, Spark. Now we can funnel these types of posts and threads to the proper venue rather than using "Maintenance" as the catch basin.
