Proper Spine Whack Test

How do I properly test my new knife? I don't want to damage the knife in the test as I have seen done on many knife reviews, but I want to be as sure as possible that it won't fold up on me when I need it. I'm sorry if this has been asked and answered. I tried searching, but whenever I do I just get a page cannot be found message.

I never do anything real extreme. Usually I'll give the spin some wacks against my palm to make sure there aren't any gross failures. If I'm more concerned I may wack it against a wooden board. Just make sure your fingers aren't in the path of the closing blade if it fails.

I usually hold the folder I want to test in my hand so that in the event the blade does snap shut my fingers are out of harms way. The best method I've found it to spine tap it on the toe of my boot. The sole is hard enough to give the spine and the lock a good test but soft enough so nieither it or the blade is hurt.

I recently tested all my liner-lock folders with a moderate "whack" against a 1/2" stack of newspaper on top of a thick rug.

I was dismayed to see two "expensive" Gerbers I've used for years fail with quite light taps, while a "cheap" CS folder with considerable lock play held up to substantial whacks.

Hit it slightly harder than you think it will be loaded in worse case senario when you are using it. If it is damaged then that is a much better alternative than having it close on you when you are not ready for it.

Always test it by hitting it out by the point about a quarter to one third the way back and do it with a pretty good wrap. You aren't gonna hurt steel by hitting it with something softer especially on the spine. Most if they are gonna fail do so when out near the point. keepem sharp
