I always store my autos in the open position, regardless of the type of spring. However, I don't have a very good understanding of the torsion mechanism in the Ken Onion and Timberline type "assisted opening" knives. Is there any reason to store these open?

Thanks for your advice,

DPD.

DPD,
I also store my autos in the open position, to keep the kickspring from weakening in the compressed position. You have raised a good point. I hope Ken will weigh in here. Until then, I am going to open up my Onions right now!

I would like to take a guess, and say that it wouldn't make a difference with the torsion release. My thinking is that when the knife is closed the tension on the spring is somwhat relaxed, otherwise it would open. Damn, now I thinking that it would be better to store it open!

I guess we will find out if Ken replies to this post... Very Interesting!

having seen this mechanism up close many many times......it is under the same tension open as it is closed.....I would say, dont worry about it.....they are warranteed, if it ever breaks send it back.....the spring is a wire spring just like in the axis lock and should last a long, LONG time..

If the spring is made right it should not matter. I am pretty sure Ken makes his right. I have a couple of pistol mags that have been loaded since new, well mostly I cannot shoot all the time. I have had no problems with them in almost 30 years. I have one of Dad's and it has had a full mag for almost 50 years.

I store them open in their cases for looks and closed in my pockets but no big deal either way.

I have a 40 year old mini-switchblade that was my grandfather's. It's been stored closed for... well... almost 40 years, and it still pops out real nice. I don't imagine the Ken Onion knives are made any worse. I have one, and have played with it quite alot, and it still pops out just as well as when I first bought it.

Just send an email to Kershaw for a new spring for my Avalanche. Broken after 6 months or so but I hope to have a new one soon.
BTW, I just love my Avalanche. Very good materials and great utility design. Thanks Ken!
