Is it 'coo-cree'?

or

'ca-hu-cree'

I've always called them "coo-cree"'s. I only own one, not a real one though I'd love an HI once I get the cash. I have a Kershaw Outcast in D2, my Grandfather passed away (I don't remember him before the alzheimers got him so I never got a heart to heart with him due to him thinking I was Babe Ruth) and had a beautiful one but I knew nothing of knives at all at the time and while I thought it was cool, I forgot to take it while helping clean the house (no I'm not one of those a hole grandchildren, it was me and my step dad who had no blood relation that did all of the work after he passed, my extended family isn't too nice) and once I went back to help my Grandmother move in with my parents, the place had been ransacked by my horrible aunt and uncle who basically stole the deed to her house but that's another story, it was long gone and is probably in a pawn shop somewhere in Philly. On another note, my grandfather was a member of the Lion's Club, a club that supports the blind among other activities, and I thought it may just be a "junk" (though obviously not junk sentimentally) kukri as a ceremonial piece for use with them. Does anyone know if they use knives, specifically kukri's, in their ceremonies?

Thanks BF,
Aaron

I think the actual spelling is khukuri. I pronounce it koo-kur-ee

That is the correct anglicised spelling and pronunciation.
In the part of the world in which these originate, the proper pronunciation is more like khoo-kur-dee.

As far as I know, ak585479, the Lions Club would not use a khukuri ceremonially.
Your best bet is to ask your aunt and uncle.

Cool thank you both very much. Asking my aunt and uncle what happened to it is useless, they're drugged out of their minds and sell everything they see. At least I can pronounce it right now though :) Thanks!

What a shame. You are probably right about it being pawned then. Or sold to some stranger.
If they were not power of attorney over your grandmas estate, you may be able to civilly have them charged for theft. You would have to have the person in charge of her estate do so, however.....Can o' worms....

Unfortunately, my mothers brother, my "uncle", though I hate to call him that, waited until my grandmother began getting senile as well, and this guy being her son just had her sign over the deed to the house as well as any power of attorney rights, then proceeded to gamble/sell it all away. Horrible person. It took every ounce of discipline I had to not lose my temper verbally or physically on him at my cousin's recent funeral though I was surprised he even showed up. My grandmother still has her good moments but she's the type of woman who would NEVER take her son to court or testify in any way unless we tricked her like he did but we wont stoop to that. So it is what it is. I wish I could have him charged but we talked to a lawyer and there's nothing that can legally be done. I'd love to teach him some manners myself but I have a 6 month old son now so I can't be doing anything illegal... Anyway, I have a great job now and hopefully soon I'll be able to afford an HI. I'd LOVE one! My grandmother is taken care of by my mother and step dad in every way conceivable. Thank you for your advice and info. I definitely have a H.I. in my future...just wish I could've at least found out what the heck my grandfather had...I really really doubt it was an H.I. but I have no idea and can't remember the subtleties of the look except it had a beautiful sheath (are Khukuri sheaths called something else?). Anyway, thanks. :)

If you want to pronounce it like a Pak, it's "ku - cootie'" (rolling the r-uh) or "kuku' -- reh." And yes, the proper spelling is khukuri.

Westernization is "coo' - cree" or "ku - ku' - ree." That one's spelled kukri.

I just know I love mine.
