Proposed Knife makers video....Help?

Hey folks,

Karen and I are considering a new video(s) that we think might benefit many of us who use and enjoy knives. Our proposal is to create a video (s?) that profiles a few knife makers and knife making classifications. Let me try to explain a bit more clearly as this is a huge topic.

We would look at a variety of names in the knifemaking industry. These would NOT be industry "giants"

We want to look at custom makers including those who produce "stock removal" and "hammer forged" custom blades.
We would look at "Benchmade" knives. (Knives that are production built but have significant amounts of manual labor involved.)
and finally, possibly, at "Factory" knives.... the big automated systems. For the sake of clarity I would also like to develop a set of terms that we can use throughout the video.

All of these makers would be USA based. They could be fixed blade or folders.

What we are hoping to do is take a look at the skill, time, design and effort that goes into a custom blade as well as some of the testing that each maker does to assure the quality of the product. We could hear arguments in favor of various materials and try to understand the conditioning (tempering) each material undergoes.

We expect that we cannot tell the whole story but we can begin to lift the covers off of the subject.

Please understand this is the seminal discussion. I cannot think of a more capable group than this forum to help guide us in this proposal. We would like any constructive comments and or directions you might like to offer.

If you are a custom maker and would like to be included, please let us know.

We are considering July as the beginning of production. We would need one or two days with each maker involved.

There are many details yet to work out.

Thanks for your comments.

Ron

Ron,
I think that is an excellent idea. I would prefer to see some of the big camp/survival knife makers profiled. Newt, Mayo, Tischbourne, Busse, etc...
It would be great to hear their opinions on what qualities make a survival knife. There are a lot of people here who are interested in dabbling in knifemaking. It should be of great interest to them or any knife nut. If I were you I might consider taking deposits or some other way of assuring you don't take a bath on this one. Lot's of people will say "Great idea!" but when it comes time to buy it, the sales just aren't there.

Take care, (AND a big knife)
Jim

p.s.- Ron, I just saw a report on the 700 club saying half of the glucosamine/chondroitin being sold is bogus. Be careful. I guess your joints will sort out the good from the bad.

Thanks Jim.

We certainly can focus on big blade makers. We are open to anything at this point. With respect to sales, survival skills folk have an abiding interest in knives. I've had requests from our customers for something of this kind but never really followed up. The story has broadcast value as well and will be designed with a broadcast audience in mind as well as a limited distribution edit with more detailed info for the Knife lover... I'm not too worried about sales.

Would a "How to" be better?

Thanks for the Heads up on the GC... I've been watching that too.

Thanks!

Ron

Ron, it's a great idea and one I would think have very broad appeal. There are dozens of little anecdotal "happenings" in a knife shop all the time. Every maker has his little horror stories. And we each have a cache of blades that didn't quite make it and a story for each. Could be great fun.

Great stuff Ron, put me on your list of prospects for makers! A well rounded video with this subect line would have a very broad appeal as Jerry says. One could video some demonstrative tests at the knifemakers shop, seeing that there is so much about testing lately. Oh yea, I could think of a lot of things to do with a video like this! I like!

Jerry, you have a cache of blades like that too?

Gulp! Rod, that cache is a little bigger than I'd care to admit.

I finished a knife last week that fought me all the way. At the end it won, and I'm just not satisfied with the result. I'm sure I'm the only one who can see the problem, but since the guy who ordered it has waited a few months, I'm going to give it to him N/C and see if he wants me to make another one.

Everyday, a new drama unfolds.

Hey Rob and Jerry...

Thanks for the reply. Rob, I put you on the list to talk to. Jerry, did you want on the list too? We will talk with all of the makers who might consider being in the production. Several other makers have written me so I thought I'd call everyone and see how I can help them and how we can make the video as instructional as possible.

We will be using vignettes to learn from a laser cutter and a water jet cutter as well. Since I haven't had any sort of significant response from the members here so I think we will rely on the knife makers and our forum, the Hoodlums, to help guide the project.

Thanks,

Ron

Ron, I'd love to participate, even if it means I have to sweep the shop. Major sacrifice there. You might also consider getting in a knife show, talking to the various makers there, collecting their little horror stories. A Show is where you see the remarkable camaraderie and willingness to help each other and new makers that I think is unique to this industry. Generally speaking, knifemakers just don't think of one another as competition. That's pretty amazing if you think about it.

Ron,
Another guy I forgot to mention was Matt Lamey. He really has some excellent and functional looking big blades. I also thought more regular folk would chime in.
If this turns out to be more for the makers, I hope you let us on the survival forums know when you complete it.

Take care,
Jim
