Just like the title implies, I am curious about the pros and cons of a neck knives. List your thoughts below! Thanks to those who reply!

Pro: they are small and easy to conceal

Con: the handles are really small and thin (at least the skeleton type)

I carry one everyday, only I don't carry it around my neck. I carry it in my back pocket, more comfortable.

Con; it's kind of annoying having a knife hang around your neck.

Pro; handy little knives if you carry them right.

The good: Most are light weight, comfortable and concealable. Many have nice handle designs that make them great for using.

The bad: Depending on the shirt, sheath and handle design, some of them are not always very quick to get out when you want to use it. Most are pretty small.

I have found recently that a neck knife can be very accesible at times. As an example when I'm fishing and have a line in one hand and a hook in the other, it is very pleasing to just reach and pull the knife from it's sheath that is hanging around my neck. Now for carrying a knife all the time like that, I don't think so.

my neck knife of choice is the Becker Bk11.
its small, light weight, and extremely strong.
i tend to throw it in my pocket or clip it to my belt alot more than wear it as a neck knife. it you wear it around your neck and are active it will slap you in the chest, and at around the third time it does this it gets annoying. but because its a small knife i always carry it. where if it was a full size i would leave it behind.

It's good to have a knife that's light and always with you. Not everyone wants a blade around their kneck all the time, as evidenced by the responses to this thread.

This one hangs from my kneck every single day, without fail. My wife gave it to me 3 or 4 years ago.

PROS: small, light, sharp, always present
CONS: not quite big enough for hand-killing water buffalo

your wife has GREAT taste in knives:thumbup:

Pro: Sometimes it's easier to get at then a knife in pocket or on belt.
Cons: Sometimes it's a lot harder to get at than a knife in pocket or on belt.

No, seriously, it depends on the knife and what you're wearing.

Great knife,
mine came with the sharkskin belt sheath, I think I would carry more with a neck setup.

Seriously, it depends on the knife and what your wearing, and if it's under your shirt or in the open.

I wear this most days, with a SAK or leatherman in my pocket.

I was considering asking this question also, because I am curious about how many people who carry fixed blades employ neck knife carry. I have two knives that I switch between, but one or the other has been around my neck for years.

I always prefer to EDC a fixed blade, and neck carry is my preferred method of carry, because it's concealed, easy to retrieve, unsheath, use, and then sheath again with one hand. Now I realize that some of you may dispute that, but I can assure you that it is no different than learning to quickly retrieve and deploy a folder, a belt knife, pocket sheathed knife, a pistol, or any other item or action that takes some repetition and "muscle memory" to do well.

Also, in the environments where it is acceptable to wear the knife unconcealed on the outside of your clothing, I don't think there is a method where the knife could be deployed faster. I often carry the knife like this around my own property, when in the bush, and sometimes at work when nobody else is around and I'm just working by myself. As soon as you can get your hand on the knife, it can immediately be put to use.

In addition to those reasons, it's just fun ok?

I Think neck knives are pretty handy. Especially when your working or in the field.

On the other hand, it can get annoying having something swinging from your neck all the time.

I like them light and small. So my HAK gets most, if not all of the carry time. But when I'm out fishing or hunting I'll take the Becker Necker.

Neck knives get a 's from me!;)

I used to think that neck knives were absolutely the most 'tactical' and cool way to carry a knive. I still like them, and I have about half a dozen, but I have a few beefs with them. If you have any body hair at all, carrying them with a bead chain [ which is usually recommended so that someone can't choke you out with your own knife] next to your skin , is a painfull experience. As others have mentioned; neck knives can also be hard to access.
Perhaps the biggest drawback is, that if you lean forward .your neck knife is sure to 'print'. [ Of course in some situations this may not matter] Mercop's tacital harness is probably a better way to carry a neck knife discretely but if you're as inflexible as I am, it's certainly more time consuming to put on and off.

Pro's I can think of none truthfully. Con's I can think of many, like for instance if it isn't under your shirt it catches on your bowstring and totally messes everything up including you face! Let me see, you usually have to carry them under your shirt and need to reach under the shirt to access the knife to use it. They come on a chord of some sort of a chain. That can pull your neck hairs so it drives you nuts or if it is a chord you can be choked with it. Other cons but those are the major ones I can think of off the top of my head.

Now the only neck knife imho worth owning bar none is the CS mini Pendleton hunter. Excellent grip ergo's, ground super thin so it cuts like the devil and the belt sheath can be worn as neck knife if you so choose. Other than that it is an unobtrusive belt knife! keepem sharp

Pro - They are great for the mall

Con - They are great for the mall

If you don't have a break-away type chain or cord a neck knife can be a potentially lethal choking hazard. :(

Pros:
- Worn outside the shirt it's probable the most accessible of all carry systems
- Worn inside the shirt it allows you to carry a fixed knife in a concealed and comfortable manner
- It frees your pocket for something else

Cons:
- Worn outside the shirt it's the most conspicuous way to carry a knife, and as such the most likely way to freak an NKP out.
- Worn inside a shirt it can be really challenging to extract quickly, especially if the shirt is tucked in.
