A100 and its mini version
Mini Commander
Mini-CQC-8 Horseman
Mini-CQC-15

I am looking at getting one of those knives for a daily carry. The problem is that I know virtually nothing about the various blade/grip styles. Would someone please breakdown what niche each of these styles fills?

The only knives I have now are a Benchmade Mini-Griptilian and an Emerson MCQC-7. I love both but I find myself carrying the Emerson more often (despite the awesome lock on the Benchmade) so I decided to go back to them for the new knife that I desperately "need".

Thanks in advance.

The horseman is probably the best all-around knife of those you mentioned followed closely by the mini-com. The A-100 is a great knife don't get me wrong, but the ergonomics do not feel as good as the other 3 listed.

If you don't mind a tanto style I think the mini CQC-15 is awesome!!! Sharpening is the only issue some might say is a problem with the mini CQC-15 and mini Commander.

I would look around and try to find the new 2009 stonewashed finish if you go with any Emerson model.

The mini A-100 looks like a great little everyday carry folder but the style doesn't look as interesting to me and there is no "wave" opener if I am not mistaken.

The horseman (mini CQC-8) might be the most practical user in the bunch and is always a favorite design. I do not believe they have made the horseman with the stonewashed finish yet but it should arrive eventually.

For now I would say the mini CQC-15 is really great and the mini Commander would be second. Stonewashed finish all the way!!!!!!

None of them are bad knives but I would personally go for the mini 8 followed by the mini A-100.

The other two are still great knives in their own right but I'm just not a big
recurve fan so they are really never going to be at the top of the list for me.

of those you mention, i would get the horseman or the a100.

i haven't owned a horseman, but i love my regular 8, and ive owned the full size a100.

i don't care for recurves, and don't see any advantage with that blade shape. they are more difficult to sharpen, and the smaller the recurve, the greater the difficulty.

the a100 is probably the better utility blade, since you can choke up closer to the actual edge. but the horseman has a guard, which can be helpful.

the a100 is going to carry better, since it is narrower, but the horseman has the wave.

basically, your personal preferences will determine which is "better". ergonomics are largely subjective and the size of your hands will be a determining factor.

+1

The horseman is a great knife, easy to sharpen, very comfortable.
For me the sharpening of the recurves is a trouble so i dont care with 15 or commander. A100 or mini 100 are very NKP friendly knives but dont have the wave and not as "TACTICOOL" as the rest.

Take the mini 8 and you wont be disappointed

I bought a Horseman a couple months ago and has become my favorite knife to carry every day. I had always been annoyed that Emerson was not "lefty friendly" but this knife works fine for me from left side. I can wave it, and the thumb disk is equally accessible right or left side.
Now I want to explore other Emersons that might work well for left hand use.

Thanks to all of the recommendation here and after looking around a bit more I think I will order a Horseman this week.

Does anyone know a good place to order it from? I would like the stonewashed finish if it is available as I have scratched, marked, and just overall made the satin finish on my mini-7 look like shit in the last three years. That said, it isn't a necessity, it would just be nice since I am not willing to wait forever to get the stonewashed if it isn't available now or very soon.

Great site but they don't have the Horseman. Also, am I to assume that item on the site is in stock? It doesn't say so do they remove any items that are out of stock?

I've never seen it in stonewashed yet. I know they have the cqc7, mini cqc7, super cqc 8, super raven, A100, mini A100, Super Commander, and mini Commander in stonewash so far.

The CQC-13 , combat karambit, and super karambit have also been made in the new stonewashed finish.

The Horseman is #1. The A100 is 2nd but you can't open it left handed. The disc is to even with the handle. Right handed opening is good though. I've back ordered the Horseman, A100 and Mini A100 all in stonewashed/plain edge finishes. It's taking a long time for their availability. Maybe I'll be recieving them sometime in the next decade. :grumpy:
