Hey fellas, new to the forum. I wanted to now if somebody can explain the pros and cons of 154cm? Also what is the next grade up from this metal? Thanks

I can only voice my opinion from what I have experienced, but I really like 154CM:thumbup: I actually have had better results with my 154CM blade than my S30V blade. My Benchmade 910 had held a fantastic edge, and is easier to sharpen than S30V.

Pros and cons in comparison to what other steel(s)?

I have (and had) knives in which 154CM has performed very well. Similiarly, I had knives (and have sharpened other's knives) in which the steel was a let down. The pesky "heat treat" issue arose, I suppose.

For a EDC folder, IMO it is a better steel than any of the 440 series (and lesser 400 steels).

BTW, I am not one to say ATS34 and 154CM are the same.

It has a very high obtainable hardness, 65 HRC, with a high wear resistance for a stainless steel due to a large amount of primary carbides. The con's are that it is brittle, with a low grindability and the very high carbide volume reduces edge stability and push cutting sharpness and edge retention.

It would depend on what you want it to do. Essentially all steels are upgrades from all other steels in certain aspects. As an example, S30V is more wear resistant, 440C is more corrosion resistant, and 420HC is far tougher. Generally you don't uniformly increase everything so you are always basically giving something away to obtain superior performance in other areas.
