ha ha . . . gotta love the Onion!

A couple of years ago they did a hilarious article on an fake Idaho gun show, and put in all kinds of heavy erotic overtones--you know, "Grasping his rifle's bolt, John Doe thrust his rigid rifle barrel upwards as he caressed the silky trigger", etc etc.
 
I just wish I found the parody amusing. The underlying idea is that it is absurd to have a constructive use for a machete outside of a primitive tropical society. You can tell that the authors could be stood in front of chaperal that needed clearing, with a machete at their feet, and they would be lost. The machete would just not be tolerated in their neighborhood.

An old friend of mine ran afoul of this mentality as a teenager. Joe (aka Jose) was born in Mexico. He started doing yardwork to support his family by age 10. He was arrested for using a machete to clear some brush in sight of a hysterical neighbor. He was actually arraigned for brandishing a weapon.
