Could anyone tell me what to use as a protectant, if any , that I should use on my Busse's. I have Sentry Tuff cloths and Renaissance wax. Thanks in advance.

My latest e-mail from Cole Distributing said there's a new Break-Free product suitable for long term gun storage, yet it does not need cleaning before the gun can be used. This would be worth checking out.

I usually expect serious preservatives to be like LPS-3, which protects but has a heavy brown waxy film.

I have a little bottle of clear liquid from A.G. Russell, simply marked "RustFree." The label reads: "This product will protect the metal in knives, guns or fine machinery from rust or tarnish while stored. Do not use on leather, wood, stag, bone or ivory. It is only for use on metal. contains no petroleum products."

I have used very little, mostly in knives stored on the shelf. You put a drop (or two on big knives) on the blade and spread a film with your finger. My smeller isn't working terribly well tonight, but I wonder if old A.G. is peddling fish oil. Or maybe it's silicone.

If you're curious, I'm sure everyone in the knife world knows A.G. Russell in Springdale, AR 72764. And it does say Product of U.S.A.

I use Vapor Corrosion Inhibitor bags for guns and other metal items. It sure would be cool if someone came up with a sheath that worked like a VCI bag.

gun tests which is sorta like a consumer reports for gun enthusiasts and accepts no advertising whatsoever did a very harsh and brutal test of gun preservatives a few years ago which i have adapted to my knives....in short they used steel plates and had one that was with no preservative as a test control and had the rest of the plates covered with the various preservatives...plates were tested at room temperature; outside in a high humidity non salt environment and left exposed to the elements; nailed to posts near the beach outside; and finally placed on the pilings of a pier at low tide so that when the tide was low they got salt spray and were literally soaked in sea water at high tide...in all scenarios two products were clearly head and shoulders above the rest: rust prevent by the makers of shooters choice and metal seal by outers.....the people at gun test recently repeated the tests but in a much less harsh way (but still much harsher than anyone here would put their blades through)..results are available in the july 2000 issue..this time of the products tested(testing was done on some idaho mountain in the spring for some reason) shooters choice rust prevent, boesheild t-9,break free clp, ox yokes wonder lube 1000 plus, du lite's kwik seal and rig universal grease were all winners....disappointly a product which i have had used and have had problems with was the tuf cloth and the marine tuf cloth....the regular tuf cloth worked better than the marine in their tests but both failed miserably in their tests....my experience is that tuf cloth (regular) is minimally ok at best as a preservative but their tuf glide is a superb lube for both guns(certain areas) and knives...i have used both metal seal and rust prevent for years as well as break free clp as preservatives for both my knives and guns and have had my stuff in the worst conditions imaginable without any rust at all...i have used rust prevent and metal seal for long term storage with and without vapor inhibitiors with very good results....never have had an episode of rust even after i forgot one gun and knife in a case that had moisture sucking foam and had them in there for over a year in a high humidity environment.....just my .02cents woth and real life experience....thanks...feverdoc@yahoo.com

oh yeah..have also used the ag russel product...it works but i find it rather messy...wd40 gums up over time in my experience but i have used it in a pinch when nothing else was available in da bayou on fishin trips and duck hunts...that brackish water will rust the most rust resistant steel in hours if it is not protected....feverdoc
