protecting a wood handle

I went to wal mart to get a Smith's diamond sharpener, then I found the sharpener I wanted that came with a fixed blade knife for less than the sharpener by itself. The knife sharpened up great and is holding a good edge. It has what the package described as a hardwood handle, since this will be an outdoor knife, what would be good to put on the handle to protect it over time? thanks for any help.

Paste wax or neutral shoe polish.
Reapply as needed.
