Protecting D2

So I have the Military in CPM D2. It is great. I am trying to determine the best way (with the least amount of stuff) to protect the D2 and prevent rust and stains.

I have a large variety of lubricants, oils, rust preventatives, etc. Basically, I haven't gotten into the Militec or other types or stuff that need to be heated when applied. I want something that is ok to use for food prep.

I have been using mineral oil. I like it, but I am unsure how much to put on and how frequently to reapply it. I slather it on with my finger then wipe off the excess with a paper towel. Throughout the week, if I handle the blade, it obviously wears off. If there is the thinnest of films of the oil, is that ok? Or do I have slather it on every couples days? I was hoping that D2 would be darn close to stainless and not need to have oil applied every couple days.

Thanks for the info.

D2 is very close to stainless as it has about 12 percent chromium and it takes 14 percent to be stainless. I would use Tuff Glide or Tuff cloth by them. If you use the knife to cut up food try mineral oil or Pam stuff in kitchen that you use for no stick. Pam works great and want harm you. Ballistol is another lube you could use and it is human and Eco friendly. By the way Mil-Tec is a great lube but it is not a rust preventive.

Just keep it clean and dry and you will be good to go.

After you use it clean it off. I have never had a problem with D-2. Like RKH said it is very close to being a stainless.

If I'm gonna use a knife for food prep I wipe the oil off it first, use it, then clean it and reapply oil afterwards.

Klever Ballistol is also good non-toxic oil that is even sold in gel capsules to keep the innards working properly!

What about storing a D2 blade in a leather sheath? Is this a no-no or not a problem?

Its probably not a good idea. With that said I do it... never had a problem, but if I did I could fix it.

I depends on a lot of variables. Quality of the leather/tanning method, humidity, finish on the D2, melt of the D2 (different melts have different levels of chromium), if the sheath is dry, if the knife is clean, etc....

Never store anything metal in a leather sheath. Knife, gun, tool, etc.:thumbdn:

I have several D-2 knives. I do not oil them. As was said before, clean and DRY after using, and you'll have no problems with D2. :)
