For Christmas I have bought myself a new RD-4 from Justin. I would appreciate any advice on what product I should use to coat this blade for rust protection. Links to sites where I can buy said product would also be appreciated. Thanks in advance and Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays to all!

I use motor oil , preferibly 10W40 Castro. It has rust inhibistors that aid in protection of these knives.
If you do , use it well and hot.

Great knife; congratulations.

Many threads on this, you'll see recommendations for

mineral oil
camelia oil
Tuf-Cloth (Tuf-Glide)
Breakfree CLP
RustFree (available from A.G. Russell)
Rennaisance Wax

rinsing it and wiping it clean immediately after use

putting a patina on it with one of several methods
including vinegar and mustard

allowing a patina to form on it naturally

________

There are other means of protection; I personally like
Tuf-Cloth/Tuf-Glide.

If I'm going to be using the knife primarily for food use
I like using food grade Mineral Oil - available at any drugstore.

P.S. - Don't store your knife in its sheath

Ill second what Boats said in addition to normal oiling, I used the mustard patina method on a custom kitchen knife to great effect.

Thanks for the helpful advice everyone. I'll have to do more research into patinas but for the moment something like RustFree or Tuf-Cloth should do the trick. rifon: I assume leaving the knife out of the sheath allows it to air out properly? Thanks again....

I assume leaving the knife out of the sheath allows it to air out properly?

MOST LEATHER SHEATHS CONTAIN ACIDS THAT WILL DAMAGE YOUR BLADE-LEATHER ALSO RETAINS MOISTURE.

YOU CAN STORE YOUR BLADE IN A KYDEX SHEATH WITHOUT WORRIES

What he said

Just be sure there's no moisture on the blade before placing (& leaving) it in the kydex sheath.

Yes and no on both occasions:
Good leather, ie, top grade leathers will not rust a blade. Its not acid, rather tannins that will attack steel if a blade is left in a low grade sheath that is wet, read wet here. I've got 1095 blades that have sat in their sheaths, I made em, for years with no ill effects.

A kydex sheath will hold in the moisture next to the knife if it is put in the sheath wet, same thing happens with a cordura sheath as well.

In short: Dry knife, dry sheath = no rust. clean and dry those knives after use. :)

Most oils will provide good rust protection - for really heavy duty protection around salt water etc, the lanolin based stuff is very good.

They key point is whether you intend to use the knife for food preparation. If so, you want something safe. This makes mineral oil a really good option. It is good for rust protection but no better than most oils, but you don't need to worry about taste or toxicity. You can find it in the home medicine section of most supermarkets. It is cheap, tasteless, odourless and non staining.

Ben, do you sell the stuff? You never post anything else but that one recommendation. What have you personally used it on?
