I'm on my 4th week of an intense workout and weight loss program and have been looking into low carb, high protein bars as meal replacements. What do you eat? What's your favorite? I've found Pure Protein Chocolate Peanut Butter to be quite palatable. Lost 20 lbs, 2" off my chest and 2.5" off my waist so far.

Me too. I am looking for a meal/snack bar that I can leave in my car or BOB but there are so many that the choice is confusing. I don't need lo carb or low calorie but too many of them taste like pressed cardboard.

Due to some serious stomach surgery last fall I've been using protein powders and protein bars to ensure that I'm getting enough protein. Here are my recommendations from 7 months of testing/tasting...

Protein Bars
- Oneway Whey Protein Energy Bar 30g
- Peanut Butter & Chocolatetastes
- Coconut & Almond
- EAS Advantage High Protein 25g
- cookies & cream
- chocolate chip brownie
- MetRx ProteinPlus 31g
- chocolate
- chocolate chip
- chocolate fudge
- Premier Nutrition Odyssey 30g
- chocolate coconut almond
- chocolate peanut butter
- Nitro-Tech 35g
- Double Chocolate Supreme

Protein Powder
- Optimum Nutrition 100% Instantized Whey Protein 23g (33g w/10 oz. skim milk)
- makes a delicious smoothie or shake w/skim milk & ice cubes
- french vanilla
- chocolate
- chocolate mint
- strawberry

Let me know if you have any questions.

The best I've tasted are called "Lean Body" by Labrada nutrition. BY FAR the absolute best tasting.

Make that sweetened pressed cardboard, Kam. :D

Wow! Lots more to add to my list of bars to try. AJ, I tried Nitro Tech Double Chocolate today. Seems like the best tasting so far.

Hi All-

Keep in mind that average-sized humans can only process about 30 grams of protein per sitting. Beyond that, a bit of stress is being placed on the kidneys. Always remember to drink PLENTY of water if an usually large amount of protein is being consumed...

I've been a fan of virtually all commercially-available protein bars since the late-1980's when maltnut PowerBars first burst onto the scene. One thing that I have noticed is that the formulations for peanut-flavored bars tend to be the most flavorful and least affected by heat.

I've tried quite a few but the only ones that were alright tasting was the Muscletech bars. Not sure what it's called but i think it was Mesotech. It had all sorts of quite nice flavours like mint chocolate chip and cookies and cream. Although it was quite chewy.

Powerbar brand Protein Plus - Vanilla Yogurt.

It didn't taste like crap & I felt full. The fake yogurt coating can melt a little if hot but it's pretty thin, after all.

Got that covered, Blue, with at least a gallon (4 X 32 oz Nalgene bottles) of iced water per day. Waking up twice in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom. :D

Thank you very much for all your replies. There are so many products to choose from that your recommendations narrow the field nicely.

Don't drown yourself. I drink 3 gallons of water per day  . I think that might be a little detrimental...

Holy cow! :D Compared to you, I'm dehydrated. :D :D :D

Hi All-

The great thing about getting back into "water balance" is that your body will regain its normal thirst mechanism. Most people are walking around in a state of semi-dehydration because they simply don't drink enough water.

Worried about retaining fluid? That is the best reason to drink lots of water. The body soon recognizes that it no longer needs to retain fluid as if it is in "desert conditions" because there is always a fresh supply on the way...

Getting back to protein bars, if you want one that will REALLY fill you up, try out the MetRx bar. It's kind of thick, so give yourself ten or fifteen minutes to finish it. The bar is relatively tasty, but you'll also need a big glass of water to wash it down.

powerbar is ok, didnt like the metrx at all, metrx meal replacement powder, chocolate IIRC, was the most horrible tasting stuff i have ever had, looked funky also.. the bars arent as bad as all that, but i liked the powerbar better myself.

Another vote for Clif. Quite low fat content. I used them on a trip in the arctic and they really save me. My favourite flavour is carrot, but by the end they all tasted like nectar of the gods.

Kashi Go Lean bars (not low carb but great taste and texture)

Genisoy bars (great flavor and candy bar texture but no fiber)

Atkins bars (I know, Atkins smatkins but they taste wonderful and have good fiber and vitamins)

I prefer the ready made cans of protein drinks. Slim Fast is still my favorite as far as flavor goes.

50 lbs lost and kept off for two years and I still enjoy eating/snacking on these bars and drinks.

205lbs to 155lbs

38"+ waist to 32"

I too like the CLIFF bars their delicious.

Two bars I haven't seen mentioned are the DETOUR bar, which tastes very similar to Snickers and I could be wrong but I believe it has the highest protein content of any bar out there.

The MLO Bio-Protein bars have 21g or protein and come in several flavors, I've tried blueberry, lemon, and cookies and cream. Cookies and cream is my favorite protein bar, it tastes like eating oreo cookies.

A fairly new bar out now is called Muscle Sandwich. It's chocolate covered graham crackers with real peanut butter in the middle along with some added protein. They are around 300 calories with 13 grams of protein. By far the best I have tasted (because of the real peanut butter). A bit high in fat, but so is a Big Mac.

I like the Powerbar low-carb ones, and the Pria low-carb. Think Thin and South Beach Diet bars are also good.
For workout protein I use Jayy Robb's Egg White Protein mix, chocolate flavor, and add Splenda to it. No fat, no sugar.
