We were finally able to pound one out between orders. Not perfect though. Need to go down a 1/4" on the first slit before the drift and maybe change the overall shape a bit..4140, you can just see the temper line if you look. ..You could see it real well if the axe was polished. The poll is hardened and tempered just like a hammer.. Not too bad for the first one I suppose. Hand slitting a piece of 4140 that big is no easy thing I tell ya' :jerkit:.

That looks great, what is the head size and haft length? Looks pretty great for a first.
;-))

Best regards

Thanks, its a trial and error thing. Getting the ammount of stock down right for the final piece, etc..How much to spread the bit before final tapering and so on. the next one will be shorter in length but wider in the bit.
Its sharp and tough though. Pop hair off your arm and drive nails like a estwing:D

Kentucky what is the overall length on that little guy? As well as the other specs. In it's current configuration I'm very interested.

I like it a lot, love the placement of your smith's mark. Give a nice polish/patina and I'd say it's good.

I think the oveall length is about 5 1/4" long with a 2 1/2" cutting edge. Overall length is 13". Thats a standard camp axe haft. Made the eye to accept those standard handles so anyone could replace the handle with a trip lowes :D

very nice - looking forward to the mk2 you mentioned in post 4.
