Prototype Bugout Questions....

I picked up a bugout a few weeks back. Can anyone tell me what prototype on the blade means? I think it is meaning a pre-production. Are their any differences between it and regular production? Is it worth any more? I was thinking about some new scales but I just wanted to make sure they would fit.

Pre-production would say just that and the number like 450/1000. Prototype is a whole different thing, those don't often make it out into the wild I don't think. In fact I'm not sure if Benchmade releases pre-production versions either as standard practice. They used to. All I've seen anymore is "first production"

You should definitely post a picture of that. Can't say I've ever seen a Benchmade with "Prototype" on the blade. Now you've caught my attention, haha.

I recall seeing "pre-production prototype" on blades many years ago. But just a prototype is pretty rare I'd think unless it's one and the same.

Thanks for the info guys!! I bought it from a small Benchmade retailer so I know it’s the real deal. I’ll try to post a pic this weekend.

Prototypes are usually limited to 25 or so; these are usually distributed to a select audience as production samples, so they tend to hold their value. Considered a "shakeout," there can be some very interesting differences between these and First Productions that follow. Would I put one of these to use? Nope. Would I keep the original box? Yep.

Thank you all for the responses. I have not used or carried the knife because I wasn’t sure what I bought. I’ll say this, it is one of the most perfect Benchmade i own. Blade centering, grind angles, axis smoothness, just everything about this one was perfect right out of the box. I guess I’ll either put it up to keep or sell it. I keep all my knife boxes, receipts, and baggies anyway. I took a few pics but can’t figure out how to post them.

Go to postimages.org and select your photo to upload, resize to 640x480 and then after you submit the page will refresh with your uploaded photo. Select the "hotlink for forums" version of your uploaded picture and copy that link and paste it here in a post and fire away.

Thank you for the info on photos!! There you go fellas. That’s her in all her glory. Even the box is marked as a prototype. I just noticed that this morning while taking the photos.

The prototypes are the first limited run that are only available to Benchmade sales reps. After that comes the first production run which are available to dealers.

I used to have a Prototype of the Rift. Bought it used, acid etched & stonewashed the blade, then dyed the scales.
