I've been working on this idea for a while now, and I'm glad to say I finally have a working prototype in my hands! I'm sure a few very minor changes will occur after more testing, but overall I am very happy with the results.
The sheath system is shown here on one of my EDC fixed blades I've had around for a while, but I am sure it will work for many knives. I'll be using it quite a bit in the future!
The retention device is an added level of security- the sheath still has a tight molded fit and can be carried securely without using the device- or "safety off" if you will. The retention device is adjustable for tension using the chicago screw (please excuse the beat- up one in the prototype!) and will be available in different colors as well. The exact shape of the safety will likely change on some future models as needed.
The safety device itself is a solid piece of G-10 composite, fitted with a press- fit steel pin and pivoting on a chicago screw or similar device. It is hand molded and fitted to the sheath for a secure fit that clicks into place.
How it works:
1: Grasp the sheathed knife by the grip.
2: Push the device out of the detent and away from the blade with your index finger.
3: With the safety out of the blade path, retract the blade from the sheath as normal. After re- sheathing the blade, snap the safety back on...
...Or carry with the "safety off" if extra retention is not desired.
Thanks for looking, and feel free to let me know what you think!
