Hey Ya'll,

I'm wondering, how many of you save the first knife of a new design? When you come out with something new do you say the heck with it and sell the first one off or do you save the new one for yourself? I think it's often a good thing to save that first one because after a period of time it's interesting to see the changes that occur with the pattern as things get more worked out. What are your thoughts on this?

I sell everything. I never saved any of the semi-production ones. Now everything is pretty much "one of a kind". I cant afford to keep them now.

I don't sell any of them Peter but I do give em away. For the ones that are intended as survival or fighters, I make two. One is to torture test and doesn't have any frills. I keep them and here lately, have been converting them into damascus.

peter, i sell # 1 and keep #2 maybe some day the will be on the hot sheet for collectors so i like to offer the # 1s to my clientele.

Peter,
Every one of mine is one-of-a-kind, and I sell them all. I have not made two of the same knife yet and plan or trying to keep it that way. I have been told that making knives one at a time, each different helps in the learning process. You can develop new techniques while making each one. Making a production line becomes too repetitive.

I sell everything. I have the plexiglass patterns though, should I wish to make another.

So far Deb claims everything I make. One that I have agreed to sell to one of the forumites will be actually my first sale when finished.

I draw all of my designs on paper, then cut out the blank on soft (cheap) steel first. Then I transfer the pattern to the good steel. I make two or three of each kind so I can (try to) keep one. I still end up giving them all away. I just returned from a business meeting where there was about a dozen of us up in some mountain cabins in Idaho. I had brought a couple of knives along to show to my pals. I ended up raffling off choice of the knives to the group and got $200 which will go to a charity...which is in an odd way, my first sale. I had 4 guys that wanted to buy one or order one.
