This post is a continuation from the Thread titled; Whoa Nellie.

There apears to be a discernable differnce between "The Original Prototype" and "a prototype". especially in the way these terms are used. I have never seen anyone claim that any knife was "The Original Prototype" as this would normally apply only to things like a cars???

Prototype is defined as:

An original type, form, or instance serving as a basis or standard for later stages.
The original or model on which something is based or formed

Some may argue that Prototype is strictly a singular i.e meaning "the first of the many"

Schrade made up to ten samples prior to approval for production and this is what many commonly refer to as a prototype these are often marked 00, 000 or 0000. I dont object to the term prototype being used in this way although it may be a stretch on its original intended meaning??

Im open to any thoughts on this or difference between Sample, Photo Sample and Prototypes.

Have you notices that the Photo Samples in the newer knives (2000 +) had a PS000 stamp and the older ones were simply 0000. Ive seen 0000 on Salesman samples as well.

No i havent noticed, but thanks Irv, Although I do have a
I have a 4 pin PS0001 LB7 Schrade which would likely be an early one?

Ive seen 0000 on Salesman samples as well.

Thats interesting as I understand it the 000 types are normally held in the companies own stash, perhaps they occasionally make an exception for their saleman? Im not sure?

Tim,
If you would gladly send that from Australia to Indiana, I could give it a complete and thorough inspection and determine its authenticity (now that I'm up over 300 posts, I believe I've lost the newbie handle by now)........and let me apologize in advance for the knife being lost in customs when I undoubtedly send it back to you:D

On a serious note, was there any rhyme or reason to salesmen samples having 0000 or SS0000? Knowing Schrade, I believe I know the answer to that riddle but I figure if I give Codger 5 minutes, he could probably find the answer to that and solve world hunger;)
