I say an ESEE 5:thumbup::cool: for a Marine.

Thank your son for me. It's people like him who allow me to enjoy the many freedoms that I do. Now, as for a knife, my vote would go for either the 4 or 5.

4 or 5 is gonna get a lot of votes- I have a 5 of those two......but a 3 mil...hey, it's mil! :)

You cant really go wrong from any of the line from the 3 up. I got my 3MIL today and it has every attachment imaginable. The 4 is a little longer and thicker which would serve better if he had to pry something. Of course the 5 will cut through a downed helicopter door and it is the thickest of the group, and the 6 is the longest with same thickness as the 4. Its length would serve I think better as a fighter and it has a decent thickness for a lot of abuse. I think I'd go with a 4 or 6 with a molle back.

Whatever you get him DON'T let him take it to boot camp. It will end up in an amnesty box day one and he will never see it again. Tell him to wait until he gets to first duty station and see whats what and what is authorized and what is not. Just my .02 cents and my vote goes to the Izula or the 3 mil. Thank your son for me whenever you get the chance.

years ago i had a friend who started in the Marines back in the 'Nam era when they still issued the M14.

he told me that if you locked a Marine in a room with two 1" ball bearings he'd break one and loose the other.

with that in mind, a 5 seems like a good choice. :p

however if his MOS doesn't require a larger blade then a 3 Mil or HEST might be a good choice. :D

I say the 5 and MOLLE sheath.
The 5 ASSURES he WON'T be under knifed for ANY situation.
The MOLLE sheath gives him a GREAT array of mounting options.

I say get him a 4 as a graduation gift from his "A" school, once he has his first real unit assignment.

What ever you get him i sure he will treasure it. 25+years ago my mom & dad bought me a buckmaster 184 as a gift for bootcamp. I have carred that knife lots of places. I just retired that knife due to sentimental reasons. I replaced it with a rc-6.

Justin is looking over my shoulder. He says the pink wont match his garter, so thats out. thanks for all the well wishs guys.

After 25 years in the regular force and now still working for the military I would suggest a RC3 (plain or mil, would not care). It would and will meet all cutting needs. If the situation warrants something bigger an M4 works just fine. I have a RC5 (ser # 45) but would not have it on my combat gear...too heavy, too big and not needed, great knife that it is.

My vote goes for a rc-4, if for a possible defense knife, go with the sharpened clip and serrations.

Depending on how much weight he can or wants to carry a 3mil, hest, 4 or 5 are good to look into. My personal vote would be the HEST or the 5.
Thank him for his service and tell him to keep his head low

I'd say H•E•S•T or 3MIL, but particularly the H•E•S•T. It's small enough to attach anywhere and not get in the way, but stout enough to take anything that can be thrown at it. The prybar & wire cutter could be real useful and the bottle opener would be handy too. ;)
