Proud Pins?

What is the correct way to smooth brass pins that are proud and sharp? I've seen videos of people using a flat file and just going at it. The last time I tried to smooth pins on a Case knife, I used a Dremel tool and ruined the handles.

You need something hard to put sandpaper on to smooth those down. A file is a very low grit and then you will be spending time getting the polish back. How proud and how sharp? If just a little proud, use 120 grit. It may take awhile, but less time to polish later. If they are very proud, maybe 80 grit paper wrapped around a flat file or a small piece of metal. Brass is pretty soft, so it shouldn't take long.

You have to use a hard backing because the brass is likely harder than the handle material and if you use a soft backing, you won't get the desired result. A hard backing will allow you to file the brass flush with the handle material.

Thanks Ron,

I'll try the sandpaper. My main concern was scratching up the handle material. Two of the brass pins on the show side are very proud and very sharp.

Thanks Bill. I don't have a buffing wheel, are there any hand-held tools that can get the same results (like maybe a Dremel, which I didn't do too well with last time)?
