Why can't I use my knife as a prybar?

Or my screwdriver?

Who started these rumors?

And exactly what are the consequences? Do I go to hell? Does the knife spontaneously disintegrate?

I want to pry things, with my knife, but I can't and I don't know why ....

I suppose calling you a prybaby would be offensive...

For folks using insanely thin folders made of brittle stainless, prying and turning screws is indeed a bad idea.

For us low alloy folks...well, we kinda do what we want. :)

Once upon a time a long, long time ago in the ancient villlage of Detroit (y'all are probably gettin' tired of these) we were doing an interagency search warrant, when a Michigan State Trooper called out "anyone got a penknife?". Like a fool, I hauled out a much used Buck 110 Folding Hunter and tossed it to him.. A few minutes later, he passed it back with a 30 degree bend in the last 3/4 inch of the tip. I did a slow burn, sucked it up, and tried to hammer it out straight later...now it has a small but distinct 'S' instead of a straight edge. I later reground a new profile on the blade, sharpened it, and gave it to a 12 year old nephew who was deliriously happy. Moral: don't use or loan nice knives for prybars. :(

When I was working as a laborer on one crew my lead asked to borrow a knife, so I handed him my Sebenza. Next thing I saw was him cutting some cloth with my edge running straight down a brick retaining wall.

Yeah, I know...I shoulda yelled at him, beaten his a$$ or made some kinda remarkably witty or venomous remark, but I sucked it up, took a walk by myself and got over it. Why? I'd been p!ss poor in the years past, and It was the first job I'd ever worked where I had mad 6K a month, and I didn't wanna screw it up for my family.

i dont know what there talking about. i use my prybar to cut things all the time.... it just takes a little longer  :D

any time someone asks me for a knife, i automatically ask them "what are you going to use it for" and generally deny them, unless they'll let me do it for them... 21 degree polished edges just arent in every day peoples general understanding of the world. to them, knives just arent supposeda be that sharp, so they never see it coming... and 21 degree's isnt even that sharp...

well... that or hand them the serrated blade on my leatherman ti (previously wave)... even i dont care about that blade...

If you want a prybar by an AK khukuri or a Becker Tac tool, a sharpened prybar.

James

I've had my eye on a Becker Tac Tool for a while but then I recently veered backed towards khukuris again. After reading reviews for the Ang Khola it sounds like it would kill the Tac Tool for everything but plain cutting. Seems to be a whole lot more useable power in the design of the khuk.

As far as prying with my knives, I just don't do it unless it's really light work. I mostly carry the same compact folder all the time and I don't trust it for anything more than prying staples out of wood and such.
