PSA: check those Amazon listings

A couple weeks ago, I was shopping around for some new belts. I have a bad habit of using belts way beyond their reasonable lifespan, so I figured I'd pick up quite a few to try to break the habit.

I've had really good luck with certain brands of budget zirconia belts in the past, and so-so results with budget ceramic belts. I figured this time around I'd give some 3M 984Fs a shot, and see if they really did last long enough to justify the price.

So, after shopping around around for way longer than any normal human being should, I came upon a listing on Amazon for 984F belts for around $153. Initially I dismissed it, figuring it would be a 10-pack, maybe a 15-pack if we're lucky. Except, Amazon's "price per item" said it was around $3.07 per belt. Hmm... that can't be right. Let's do the math to see if it comes out to some oddball number: 153/3.07 = 49.83. Could this really be a case of 50 belts?

So I took the plunge, figuring if it ended up being only 10 belts, I could return it due to mislabeling. Sure enough, an entire case of 50, 3M branded, 984F 60 grit belts showed up to my door. Provided, I'd much prefer to have an assortment of grits, or all 36 grit for heavy grinding, but I'm not complaining. For just over $3 per belt, I can afford to not treat these like they're made of gold.

So the moral of the story is, it's worth it to check Amazon listings from time to time. Occasionally you'll find a gem. Hopefully someone else will get lucky at some point as well.

Recently found something similar for a pack of Nicholson files. Single files were going for about $15 to $25 or so IIRC. Found one listed as a 10 pack for $25.

Bulk shopping is much lower priced ... if you use the product often enough.
If you use 50 60grit belts a year that is a good deal. If they start breaking after a year due to the joint failing it may be higher per actually used belt. Since files don't go bad, box-paks (usually 10) are a great savings.
