PSA: there are several CRKT knives listed by retailers as made in China when they're actually made in Taiwan

For some of you this won't matter at all, but for some it will. Politics are generally not allowed in the General Knife Discussion forum, but general information on knives is.

The other day I was looking at the new CRKT Seis model, designed by Richard Rogers. I noted that most retailers listed it as made in China, but that one or two listed it as made in Taiwan. I emailed CRKT's customer service and they confirmed that it is in fact made in Taiwan.

I asked CRKT if they had a list available showing the country of origin for each of their products, for those customers who cared about such things. They said they do not, but that they can provide information about specific models upon request.

After doing some more digging, I found other models listed by most retailers as made in China that are in fact made in Taiwan. Among them are the CEO Compact, the CEO Blackout (also Rogers designs), and the Fawkes. I believe there are likely several more.

A.G. Russell Knives always lists the country of origin for all knives it sells, and it appears that they have accurate information on the country of origin for each CRKT model they sell.

Moral of the story: If you care about country of origin, and you see a CRKT you like, it might be a good idea to check A.G. Russell's site for accurate info in that regard. If A.G. Russell doesn't list it, then you might email CRKT's customer service to get confirmation.

I don't buy many CRKTs anymore (I've become too much of a knife snob), but having owned many in the past, I have noted that the Taiwan-made ones tend to be better made than the China-made ones.

Just a note that in cases like this they may have factories in both countries and they take the safe but less popular option of listing them as China since they could feed production from both downstream without anyway to accurately update the retailers.

Just a guess though.

So, if the AG Russel website is the definitive on country of origin, then that means my hunch about the CRKT Sting is correct... It is a China made product 😔

FWIW, China thinks that Taiwan is still a part of China.

I personally don't give a sh*t whether a knife is made in China or Taiwan, as long as it is "well-made." I own a lot of knives made for Spyderco in Taiwan and and I also own a lot of knives made knives made for/by others in China, including Spyderco. Kershaw and CRKT.

On the other hand, I don't own any knives made in Russia. Why? Because IMO knives made in Russia are too f*cking expensive.

Politics has nothing to do w/it.

For me, it's just about the knife; how well it's made, whether I "like" it or not and what it costs.

According to my sources Seismic is still made in Republic of China
Interesting observation. Because every model by CRKT that has the Deadbolt Lock says "Made in Taiwan" on the UPC side of the box.

Although on a personal note I would like to see CRKT transition back to Taiwan and Japan as contractors.
