Ashley and I decided we were going to go for a hike in Cherokee National Forest and then spend the night out. While we were at it I wanted to do my PSK challenge entry. So my idea for the challenge was that I was only allowed to take what I had in the car. What I carried with me was my Maxpedition bottle holder kit, 2 knives made for me by Mark Wohlwend, and a green army issue wool blanket. Inside the blanket was wrapped a small blanket for Gunner to sleep on, and a wild edible plant book that I found tucked under my seat. Since Ashley was coming with me She carried whatever she felt she would need to be comfortable. I am beginning to think that she considers bringing me and my gear along as part of her planning process. I would hate to be her if we ever got separated, but i don't mind as long as she has a good time. She also packed from the car, but items like the Sierra Designs UL tarp she brought with are not always in the car so I didn't want to include them. I was going to carry my ENO hammock, but she asked for it (I think i am just gonna buy her one). For food I had a sandwich size baggy full of cashews and a couple packs of oatmeal tucked away in my bottle kit. Ash received a large shopping bag full of goodies from my mom as we were leaving the house (of which i am happy to say that while it was difficult, I did not eat any of the contents). Anyway I figured it would rain a little. There was only a 30% chance, but it has been raining at least a little bit every day this summer. I may have underestimated the rain a little, but I blame the weatherman
.
So we set out for our little adventure
Its about a 40 minute drive from my parents house to where we got on the trail
We set of as soon as we got everything ready to go.
We did just about 6 miles before we got back to the car and started to set up camp.
Came across these guys while on the trail
Starting to make camp....about 3 min before the heavens open up.
the clouds moved in and made it dark quick
Then the rain started...:grumpy:
Gunner doesn't like the rain very much
Poring rain...need a fire...no prob. I think this was the wettest fire I have ever started.
We ended up calling the trip later that night. Ash was going to sleep in the car with Gunner and I was gonna sleep in my hammock and tarp shelter, But Ash was limping around. I think she strained her groin on the hike, but she knows i hate it when she complains so she was just not saying anything. So, after I got her to tell me what was wrong I cooked up some oatmeal for us and then started packing up. I don't mind being miserable for a night, but I hate to force someone else to be miserable . Net time I will just go by my self. I will post up my next trip in the actual PSK challenge thread.
Hope you all enjoyed the pics, and thanks for reading.
Best,
