I just spent the last two days out of my head sick with the flu. It has given me a new perspective on certain things. If you don't already have Immodium AD in your PSK, add it now! If you can get your hands on some anti-nausea meds, those could be a lifesaver too, but Immodium is easy to get hold off and should be in every pack.

Add a z-pack of Azithromycin for that potentially fatal chest infection and you are good to go.

I had some nasy nasty a couple weeks ago.

Lost 9-10 lbs in 9 hours.  13 over the total 72hr period.

Remember to pack something soft and soothing for the "raw" parts....

Also be sure to carry at least sugar and salt to make your own electrolyte mix...

In our kits for the desert, we carry squenchers which is sort of an off brand Gatorade. You can lose enough potassium through even a couple of hours of bad diarrhea to take you out of business. Carrying a packet of Gatorade could help alot in this scenario. (But, conversely, don't try to drink only that stuff. It WILL give you the squirts.) That works better than just salt pills and the sugar in the Gatorade will give you a big boost.

I also carry oral benadryl (for possible anaphylactic reactions), along with an NSAID pain killer (motrin or advil), and pseudophed (because I've develop allergies recently). Probably other things. I'll have to look. But I always have immodium for sure. If you have access to it, phenergan would be nice to back up the immodium.

Last summer, I got a "bug" that Immodium didn't help AT ALL. Everything went straight through for four days, leaving me extremely week. Something stronger (i.e. prescription stuff) would be advisable for really out-of-the way trips (Lomotil)

I keep seeing references to prescription meds in a PSK. How does one (legally) obtain a prescription med for a condition or illness one may have in the future?

See your doc. Tell him your worries and what you are going to be doing. Mine knows me well enough that he has prescribed/given several medications for my use if I need them when I have been camping. He just prescribed Zithromax(generic) for me again. The last prescription expired before I used it. Just be reasonable with your expectations with what he might prescribe and you are trying to justify. My doc is also a member of the wilderness medical society and a hiker so he has good insight into wilderness needs. He is also aware I am an EMT and a Wilderness EMT so I suspect that he also knows I'm not likely to do anything really stupid with them. ;) I do suspect that anyone with real justification talking to thier doc wouldn't have a real hard time getting a script for antibiotics and the like. Schedule narcotics might be another thing entirely.

Plus that means the insurance company pays for it (at least most of it) instead of me. He also sometimes has free samples that he can give which cost nothing.
