Sorry, I know this may not be the proper venue for this...

However, I just want to encourage everyone to download adware, and spyware detectors if you surf the net. You can get some free ones on the net that will clean your system of these programs.

It's absolutely shameless how these companies implant these software programs on your system without your knowledge to relay information back to them whenever you go on the NET.

It changes the registry keys on your operating system, pops up unwanted windows and ads, changes your browser settings, etc. They're as bad as these jerks who send out viruses.

One of the worst offenders of late are those bastards at xupitor.com.

Let's put these jerks out of business!

Well kind of Alpha,

Actually, I misplaced a comma creating an ambiguity. It should have read "Adware and spyware detector" inclusive.

So, yes, you are correct that I didn't mean to say to download adware. Thanks for clearing that up.

However, I didn't want to recommend any particular adware detectors at risk of sounding like I was spamming. But AdAware is pretty good.

I hope people don't just gloss over this since it's unrelated to knives and think it's not worth their while. Spyware is a real big problem and it's an invasion of privacy. I bet most everyone who doesn't have an adware detector here has spyware loaded on their system without their knowledge.

IF YOU VALUE YOUR PRIVACY, LISTEN TO WHAT I'M SAYING...

Thanks for the kick in the a$$ to get me moving on this one. This is an excellent tip and something that I was always going to look at, but just never got around to until now. I have/had 8 different programs running in the background doing God knows what.

For those of you that want the software, just go to www.google.com and do a search for "spyware" and there will be links from zdnet, cnet, pcworld.com, majorgeeks.com and others that you can get the software for free. ZDnet also has a good article explaining the problem in more depth.

Code Alarm Pro works real well. One of the best $20 I've spent recently. Not only does it block pop up ads, it blocks ads embedded within the web pages I view. Highly recommended.

FWIW I used, Black Ice Defender before and much prefer Code Alarm Pro.

I had developed somehow, a horrible problem with neverending pop-up ads, and i didnt even need to have my browser open for them to come! They would freeze my computer half the time and i didnt know what to do about it. I urge anybody who has been the victim of this type of pop-up ad to check their startup programs list and see if you have a program there called Winservs.exe, if you do, find it in your Windows folder and GET RID OF IT! Problem solved.

There is another program for unwanted ads called "AdSubtract", there is a free trial version available, it works pretty well.

ehh
black ice defender is pretty well known for being incompetent
check out what http://grc.com/dos/grcdos.htm has to say about it

I did not have a current copy of BlackICE Defender around, but I felt that this was an important test. So I laid out $39.95 through Network ICE's connection to the Digital River eCommerce retailer and purchased the latest version (v2.5) of BlackICE Defender hot off the Internet. I had already removed all traces of ZoneAlarm and restarted the machine, so I installed BlackICE Defender, let everything settle down, and restarted the machine with my packet sniffer running on an adjacent PC.

As far as I could tell, BlackICE Defender had ABSOLUTELY NO EFFECT WHATSOEVER on the dialogs being held by the Zombies and Trojans running inside the poor "Sitting Duck" laptop. I knew that BlackICE Defender was a lame personal firewall, but this even surprised me.

small segment relating to the BID-POS :)
