Puget Sound Axe has me confused

I hung this axe with the bigger end of the eye up but this means that the date the axe is forged is on the top, it's marked "26". Anyone know why the top would have a smaller eye end or failing that why the marking would be on the top?

They are hard to tell what end is up by just looking at them. I'm sure a number of them get stamped wrong.

Now that you say it I think that's what it is. Everything from the shape and temper is a little off in relation to the eye but that eye is at least an eighth inch bigger on the top as we're looking at it in the pictures.

Is it correct that the number stamped in is the date? That would date this to 1926. If that is the case and with it being a Puget Sound I would suspect it's a pretty decent head. It's felt pretty good as I've filed the edge.
