I found a PUK for a crazy cheap price, so I got one to try out. I'm pleasantly surprised
The knife is thinner and lighter than I thought it would be. It has perfect balance, like most Emerson designs. The blade is a very utilitarian shape, with a very tacticool clip point and swedge. The cutting edge is almost exactly the same as a CQC-8, only the blade itself is a little bit wider (PUK is straight backed unlike the curved '8). It didn't even take me 5 minutes of stropping to get the polish the edge and get it 'scary sharp".
The handle is great. It's barely big enough for my hand, which means it's "just right". The G10 is thick and fits the tang perfectly. There is a large hand guard to keep your hand from sliding up the blade, and two lanyard holes in the tang at the bottom of the handle. It has subtle finger grooves, enough to improve grip but not so proud that they limit grip options.
The sheath is f***ing incredible, it's the best designed and built kydex sheath I've used (and I've used a lot, and make my own). The retention is very secure but the knife is still accessible. Some kydex makers put their rivets too far out from the blade, making their sheaths wider, the PUK's sheath is as narrow and compact as possible, it's a very efficient design. It carries high on the belt, perfect for a short bladed (relatively) knife. It also came with a Tek-Lok. The sheath alone makes this knife a great value.
The only thing I don't like is the shiny screws holding the grip on, they really stand out on the otherwise blacked out knife.
This knife and sheath are so flat and light there is little reason not to have a capable fixed blade around. The PUK is as compact as an ESEE-3, but lighter, with better balance, better materials, and a much better sheath.
I rarely hear about these knives, does anyone else have one?
