First off I know these are crap and I personally own an Edge Pro myself however my Mom is looking to get one for her kitchen knife. I dont live anywhere close to her so I cant exactly stop by there and put an edge on her knife for her. She asked me to find one for her and she is dead set on this device. So is there one that kinda works better than others and where can you get these things?

Thank you

Sharpmaker. That's a "pull through" sharpener (kinda), and once you teach her how to use it, she'll never go back.

+1 to staying away from the carbide scrapers. they will ruin a knife. tell your mom to stay away from them too. get the ceramic sharpener like hiwa suggested.

I would have a look at the DMT DiamondVee. It's like the Sharpmaker, but there's really nothing to setup. Just pull it out, sharpen, and put it away. I also mention it because the Sharpmaker can't sharpen a dull edge, it can only maintain it. The other ceramic sharpeners might have the same problem.

on the sharpmaker are you saying.....can't sharpen or just takes a really long time? cause i've sharpened dull knives to a razor with my sharpmaker, many times...just takes forever to do it, even with the diamond rods.

If money isn't an issue, flat rate boxes and rotate knives through the mail... my moms favorite kitchen knife is 20+ years old and I have to grind away the heel every time I visit... stupid power sharpener doesn't even mess up all the blade at once.

For those who only care that it cuts better than the side of a fork, it's all the same.

If she's cuttin on ceramic, she'll probably be better served by the carbide pull through.

I like the Furi Ozitech diamond finger sharpeners. The sharpening fingers are flexible and follow the blade bevels, instead of forcing a fixed angle like most pullthrough. Diamond coat is pretty agressive too.
