Pulled the Trigger and Ordered Sage-1

Being a Chaparral owner, I wasn't sure if I should get the Sage-1 or not. Most everything I've read is people wanting to go from the larger Sage-1 to the smaller Chaparral. I love the fact that the Sage-1 will probably fill my large hands better and I really like the looks of the open design and the liner-lock. From what I've read, this is about the best implementation of a liner-lock that's ever been done.

So, within the last hour, I went online and ordered a brand new Sage-1 for just south of $105, shipped. I hope to have it by the end this upcoming week. I can't wait. To keep my mind off waiting for it to arrive, tell me why I did the right thing, how much I'll love the Sage-1 and to look forward to enjoying about the knife.

The Sage series, along with the Daly/UKPK series, seem to be about ideal for my hands. Everything seems to fall in just the right places when I grip them. Of course, after you get the Sage 1, you're going to want the others in the series...

I really like the Sage 1, so much so that I own 2 of them. The knife fits really well in the hand and seems to have a good amount of cutting edge, and I like larger folders (3.75" or more).

This thread needs pic's...

Just slightly modded, rounded the spine, polished the liners and added some lock bar jimping.

I think the Sage 1 is one of the best edc knives I have. And I usually like slightly larger knives.

I really want to say something that hasn't already been said a million times about the Sage1, but for me it is the perfect "baseline" edc knife that I own. It has all of the production knife attributes that I like in one perfect size package.

Where did you get it for 105 shipped out of curiosity?

I got mine for $80 off of the Exchange a few months back. Might of been LNIB but for all intents and purposes that sucker was NEW. They pop up occasionally.

Great midsize/smaller knife. Classy enough for a suit and robust enough for everyday tasks.

My Sage-1 arrived and my initial impression is a good one. It's as smooth as my Chaparral, but opens much easier and faster. Maybe I do have to loosen up my Chaparral, although everyone has told me it will loosen up on its own in time. When they say the Sage-1 is the big brother, they're not kidding. That's the best way to describe it, although it is an open frame vs. the closed frame of the Chaparral and it's a frame-lock vs. the lock-back, which I already knew about. The fit and finish seems great, as expected. The blade is nice and sharp as well. Overall, I'm am please with the Sage-1 and can understand why it comes so highly regarded.

I'm not that great with photos, so I'll just post these two and leave "professional type photos" to the rest of you creative guys who seem to know how to bang that out of the park.

I've got (1) more knife coming in that I'm really looking forward to and that's the Benchmade 531. I understand it's a different knife from a different company, but the looks and specs of the 531 are really impressive to me. I just hope that coffin-shaped grip feels well in my hand. I have my pre-order in for the 940-1, however I may cancel that. I'm not sure that I'm willing to spend that much coin on that knife, especially after getting this Sage-1. Maybe I'll get the 940-1 and decide which one stays and which one goes. My bank account really can't handle me owning both.

Neither of these pictures are mine, but they do show the 531 and the 940-1, both in carbon fiber.

Just an FYI, but the Sage 1 is a liner lock. The Sage 2 would be a frame lock.

Glad you like it. Sadly it is currently my only Spydie but it is surely one of the knives that I will never part with.

Yes, thanks. Not sure what's going on with me, but I continue to type frame-lock when meaning to say liner-lock. I've done this at least 6 times on various boards over the last couple of weeks. Don't know why. I know better.

No worries bro. Trust me, brain farts happen all the time.:p
Enjoy the Sage, it is truly a pleasure to carry.

Thanks for this picture, I guess I never realized the Chap only has the 2 external screws. One of the things I like about my S1 the most is it only has the 3 screws so the chap is even better. I've had it on-again-off-again from my list several times but now knowing this I think its going back on my list for good (well till I get one).

So is it possible to disassemble the CF chaparral? Does the lock bar have a hidden, screw in pivot under the scale or is it pinned under there?

Overall the Sage 1 is one of my favorite tools, period. Just the right size, nice and light, very grippy, premium looks and feel at a very fair price. Love that thing!

Over the last 6-months, I got the following.

Chaparral
BM 940
Sage-1
BM 531

If I had to get rid of any of these to fund another purchase, the Sage-1 would probably be the last to go, followed by the Chaparral. I just love the looks and feel of those two knives. My feelings might change down the road, but that's how I feel today about them.
