This may or may not be the right place to ask but, I thought I'd start here. We just started doing a little advertizing and though I can take descent picture, my software doesn't allow me to pull just the knife off a photo. This would make putting an ad together much easier. Eliminating backgrounds and props that can get in the way of text. Does anyone know what programs can do this? I currently use PhotoImpression 4.

There are plenty of folks that could probably help you out. I have photoshop 7 and can pretty decent with it. If I can be of any help, just let me know.

I think the program you want for that is Adobe Illustrator, J. Unfortunately, unless you can skank an old copy off of eBay, it's like $600 for the software.

another thing that will help, will be to take your pics on neutral backgrounds that don't have any of the colors in your knife.

"neutral" as in tan, grey, med. blue, etc....pale pastels, earth tones, etc.

Then in photoshop (or similar) you can use the "wand" tool to grab that color. Reverse your selection and you have the knife ready to be copied elsewhere.

Gotta ask, though.....what's the intented purpose for this?
(just curious)

I use GIMP! It's free and in many opinions just as good as Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator .

Here is the website: The GIMP

It used to take a little setup before running it on windows but the new release I downloaded and used right away.

And as Dan said, if you take a picture of the knife on a background of all the same color, you can use the "select by color" feature and delete all the background color.

To add different backgrounds, use the layering option available and you can flip through different backgrounds.

I've used GIMP to create graphics for websites, embroidery and countless avatars and pictures.
