I posed this question on another forum. I'm hoping someone might have some knowledge about Pumas source for their antlers. I just bought my first knife from them and the antler is too "pithy" to be Sambar. Any factory authorized repairman out their. They would probably be in the know about this.

I have a Puma Bowie I bought circa 1972. I believe they still used Sambar stag back then.

My guess is the older ones like yours might very well be Sambar (judging from the pictures I've seen of older Pumas). Mine is too "pithy", like elk antler.

They used sambar for a long time. With supplies of quality sambar drying up, they may be using something else now. Or they are using sambar that would have been tossed away as inferior 30 years ago. I have a number of them, folder and fixed, from pre-1964 through the late 90s, and they are all high quality sambar. The web pictures I see for current production don't look as good.
