Most of the knives that I own are Buck, Kershaw, Boker, etc. How does Puma's quality compare?

Used to be quite high. Now is reported to be spotty. Reminds me of Gerber.

My one and only Puma is a Buck 110 look alike I bought in 1965. It survived a year in Vietnam and my son hammering it into a tree a few years later. He forced it backward and the blade swung free like a dingle berry. It's fixed and up and running today...

Puma made some of the best production knives in the world up until they were sold in the early 80's. Since then the quality has dropped dramatically. I bought one of their stag handled four star knives out of curiosity a couple of years ago. The stag was lousy, fit and finish was well below average, and it didn't hold an edge well at all.

My advice - steer clear of Puma. But... if you ever run across one of their older knives in the green and yellow plastic box - jump on it. Those pre-early
80's Puma's were outstanding knives.

Never saw one except the folder I brought with me... Marines had KaBars but don't know about the other branches
