I see that Puma has a cheaper version of the White Hunter out, called the 'New Hunter'. Anyone here handled both to compare?

Not sure about this knife, but other "cheaper" versions of the classic Puma knives usually have synthetica handles, lower quality steel, lower quality construction methods and worse fit and finish. In general, for Puma, you get your best value for their premium grade knives. The White Hunter is a classic, you may want to spend the extra money and get an older one in carbon steel. They are historically durable and retain their value.

I have an old White Hunter (about 30 years or so) and it is real nice - I also have a newer White Hunter II with kraton handle which is not very nice at all.

I have not handled the New Hunter but it is my definite impression that many newer Pumas are not worth the price. The steel of the New Hunter is 1.4034 which is equal to 420 at 52-54 HRC, so you should not expect very high performance from it. I'm pretty sure some of the lower priced Puma's are made in Spain which is ok, but generally Puma products are not of the quality that made their original reputation.
