I've just picked up an older Puma white hunter (1968)with pumaster steel, can it be stored in its sheath without rusting or discoloring, what is the max time it can left in the sheath in dry conditions?
Thanks, Jim

The short answer is to never store a knife in a leather sheath. In damp camping conditions I even remove the knife from from the sheath overnight.

You picked up a clasic well made knife that will provide a lifetime of enjoyment. Older Puma's are of very high if not of the highest factory quality.

Thanks for the information, did Puma make the white hunter model in stainless steel?, I think I'd rather have stainless if it was made in that model, if so maybe I could trade, mine is like new.
Thanks again
Jim

Your Puma knife is probably worth too much to be using. Some collectors go hog nuts over those old Pumas. Keep that blade wiped down with oil, and do not store it in the sheath. If you want one in Stainless, they can be readily found. But, I think you might have a keeper in that old Pumaster version.

The blade is probably chrome plated, so the only rust you might see is on the edge bevel and possibly on the false edge, as I experienced once on my pre-1964 Hunter's Friend. Of course, that was after storing longterm in the sheath in a humid climate (upstate NY). Now that I live in a dry climate, I store all my carbon steel blades in the sheath and have had no problems.

That older Puma carbon steel is great stuff.

The only place I see rust on an older White Hunter is the edge and the exposed tang. If an owner has acidic hands the exposed tang will rust quite readily.
If you want to trade a Pumaster steel White Hunter for a Stainless one please contact me at Pumaonly@aol.com
