What if any is the difference in 440a steel and there PUMAclip ?
I noticed :
PUMAclip also states Custom proofed Rockwell Hardness proofed ( whats with that)?????
The 440a adds states Custom proofed Rockwell Hardness of 55-57
Is this because of whear it's made?
I was realy wanting another puma since i lost my last one years ago but if they are inferior then i will look for somthing else.
Thanks.

Howdy,
Welcome to BladeForums!

I have heard that Puma uses 440A or similar but do not know for sure.

"Rockwell hardness" is a measurement of how hard the steel is.
Can't say for sure but it sounds like each knife is tested, which would be unusual.
A Rockwell hardness of 55-57 is about as hard as 440A gets.

I haven't had a new Puma for 40 years, so I cannot vouch for the current quality.
There's nothing inherently wrong with using 440A in a knife that is used for daily minor cutting chores. For heavier usage I'd likely recommend a blade made of another alloy.

Welcome aboard.

the stainless in 70s on better knives were individually [every knife] rr tested. the stainless did'nt cut as good as eye brand not tested.however the pumaster carbon steel was good stuff. fit & polish was unsurpassed in that time period.

Dennis,

I have a Puma 965 Deer Hunter that was a gift from my father in 1980, and it has the Rockwell tester imprint on the blade, just forward of the nail nick. Were those made from 440A steel? I have long wondered. The Deer Hunter looks a lot like a Buck 110, for those unfamiliar with it. It is very beautiful and very heavy for its modest size.

Thanks for the help..
I may look to a auction to see what i can find.. Its not hard to tell fake from real. Off hand does anyone know how to date them?

it seems the alloy was an X series , nothing real exotic. was better than american s.s. in 70s but far behind eye s.s..the difference in eye & puma could be heattreat. all pumas from 70s or earlier were stamped with a code. was a series of numbers which desiginated year & quarter of yr.one of the forum members has the code info maybe he will chime in.
