i have just received a Puma White Hunter 11, made in 2001 and have 3 questions.
1) the proximal 2/3rds of the spine is factory bevelled and somewhat obtusely sharpened. why ? i presume to hack with, but then you lose the ability to baton as either edge will bite and hold the baton. there must be more to it ?
2) the lanyard hole is 1/3rd the way up the handle rather than close to the butt. do those who have a knife with a lanyard hole so placed, like it ? does it make any difference ?
3) "stainless" , would this most likely be 440 C ?
thanks, roland

That hole is not really a lanyard hole. On the old sheaths there was a leather thong loop fixed to them about even with the hole in the handle. You pushed the leather thong thru the hole in the handle and then looped it back over the handle. It served like a second and very positive way to make sure the knife NEVER fell out of the sheath. At least thats the way it worked on the old Puma bowie I had back in the 60's.

As the white hunter was designed as a hunting knife, the back bevel was for use on game, not wood. You would use the back bevel like a meat cleaver when taking apart the joints. Or so I remember reading someplace. Most likely the people who desgned the knife never knew about batoning.

The Puma I had was carbon steel, so I have no experiance with the later stainless ones.
