i just got one of these in a trade, but the markings on the blade dont match the ones in the picture. instead of having all the words flat, the lettering is parallel to the bevel. i dont know how to describe it better, but are there, any other ways to find out? (aside from the blade markings, everything is EXACTLY the same as the one pictured. stag handles, three rivets, and a lanyard hole between rivets 2 and 3. thanks for your help:)

oh yeah, above the words "puma white hunter" on the blade, there are some nnumbers: "6377" does this mean anything? it also came with a sheath. on the sheath the word "puma" is *stamped*(?) (the letters are raised) right above it, in the same fashion, is a puma's head, on the back of the strap, it says "made in germany":)

perfect..........except the puma on the sheath is facing the wrong way, the blade markings are the same.....except theyre on the other side of the blade....do the numbers on the blade mean anything? the sheath shape is different too. i was told that this knife was over 20 years old.:)

The numbers on the blade are probably a date code. If you go to the bottom of the page on the link I provided and click on *Dating Chart* you might just be able to tell exactly when your knife was made.

thanks, but i just noticed that the numbers on my blade, 6377, are also on the link you sent me. to the left of the label "white hunter" under the picture, the number 6377 appears. would this be a model number then?

thanks to fellow forums member crosman177, i've cleaned up the blade a bit. i can now read the writing clearly. under the number 6377, im large font is "PUMA WHITE HUNTER" below that, in much smaller font, is "GENUINE PUMASTER STEEL GERMANY". will this verify anything? thanks again for all your help

6377 is the model number and your knife is probably at least 20 years old. I would be willing to bet that your knife is authentic.

wow..does it have any collector value? patina is developing on exposed steel parts of the handle. some (very small amount) of rust is on blade. and blade is not sharp. with some *very very* minor dings on edge. will go away with sharpening. sheath is in poor condition, button clasp has been cut :S straps for fixing to belt were also cut  outer "rim" of holder is wearing away.

I had one exactly like yours that I had bought in Mainz Germany while I was stationed at Rheinmain ab in 1990.

lifter4Him,
I lived in Wiesbaden, worked at Rheinmain, and frequented frankfurt Main, Darmstadt (ie, surroundind areas). My family is originally from Bohmenkirck, a little farm village between Stuttgart and Munich, its now in Baden-wurttenburg (formally Wurttenburg).

I use to go to the px at mainz-kastel many times. Thats where I bought the puma white hunter. I bought many wonderful knives in Germany.....I miss them sometimes! (sold all of them). I remember reading in blade magazine this past year that many roman sword blades, especially the mainz style (named so because they were found near mainz) were, and are, found in the river near mainz. I wish I had known it than I would have perhaps tried to look myself!!! very pretty area around there, especially in the summer. I have to say though southern Germany is so much more prettier though!!!
