I have a dilemma, today I purchased a new old stock 1989 Stag Puma Bantam in box with all original paperwork including the Rockwell sticker on the main blade. The price I paid was very reasonable. Now my issue, should I remove the Rockwell sticker, put the knife into my pocket and carry it or should it remain a safe queen?

I'm thinking I'll carry it.

Opinions?

I understand that there will always be safe queens as there are many knives that are just plain works of art but I personally have never bought a knife that I did not intend to use. I find that a knife bears more value when it is being used for the purpose it was built, which translates to being more sentimental value than monetary, but still...

Carry it and enjoy it!

I think your knife was made in the first half of 1989 using the code #23981. If it were me I'd pull the sticker and stick it inside the box. Then carry the knife when the mood strikes.
Nice knife

When in doubt, use that knife!!!

It would be a hard question for me. Puma's are special to me because it is the first knife my Dad gave me. ( still got it ).

Because I have other EDCs I would leave the sticker on, and put it with the safe queens. I have other knives waiting to be carried so I could wait with that beauty.

Great score.

Nothing wrong at all with safe queens. I have some myself, and am proud of my collection.

However...

if you feel your knife will be useful and comfortable to carry - you should take the plunge. If you carry it a few times and realize it's not a great EDC for you, then pack it up and put it away. You really won't hurt it's value much if that's a concern.

Like others have said, the knife you carry ends up being your favorite.

It is such a lovely knife. Never used all these years and in great condition. If it was mine I would not remove the sticker and would not use it. But I would handle it from time to time and enjoy it. Thanks for sharing! ~OG

Thanks to everyone for the feedback. I have amassed a fairly large collection/accumulation of knives over the years and have a drawer full of traditional EDC knives. However, I have only two Pumas, a stockman that I purchased in the late 80's in Nuremburg Germany and this Bantam.

After much consideration, I'm going to carry the Bantam, at least through Christmas. It will be used to assist the grandchildren in opening gifts. This way the Puma is used a bit, but not abused. As some have said, why have it if you are not going to use it.

Is it bought being used as an investment or part of a collection? If so, keep it clean and oiled and showing nicely. If you got it to carry, then by all means, use it!

When I buy knives, I have very clear intent to put the knife into 1 of those 2 catagories before I ever shell out the cash.

Which will bring you more pleasure: carrying it and using it, or fondling it and admiring it periodically?

Once you answer that question...do that.

I have knives that I just enjoy *having* (my birthyear Victorinox Soldier, knives given to me as "farewell" gifts at the end of Army tours, etc.), and there are knives I enjoy using. There's not a thing in the world wrong with either.

Thanks again for all of the great responses. I'm currently enjoying the bantam as an EDC.

Pumas from that era are great knives and worthy of carry. I have a different model from the same era. I still have the guarantee card, too. Good choice!
