Puma's black hardwood handles

Back in the early 80's I bought a couple of Pumas with black hardwood handle scales (Models 725 and 6025). The literature from Puma that I have from that time period describes it only as black hardwood. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what kind of wood it is. In appearance it could pass for ebony, but viewed from the edge it looks like it could be laminated.
