Pumaster steel discoloration

Hello group.

I recently purchased a very trashed 1967 Puma White Hunter to get the beautiful 60's era sheath that was with it. I decided to work on the blade to see if I could remove the numerous scratches, then keep the knife as a user. I sanded the flat of the blade with successively finer grits until I was working with 2000 grit paper. Two areas on the blade began do exhibit a faint goldish brown hue (maybe 3/8" x 1" each). More polishing with the 2000 grit paper made it more noticeable. Rubbing compound has removed all evidence of the discoloration.

Does anyone here have ANY clue why the sandpaper would have discolored the blade? Are these blades coated in any way, or is the blade temper a case hardening? Any wisdom on this will be appreciated.

Thanks loads,
Bridgeman

If it is Pumaster steel, it was probably chromium plated. I know they plated their carbon steel blades, but I don't know when they started doing it.
