I have had quite a week chasing my seven month German Sheppard puppy around the shop. She has been stealing antler whenever I set it down on the bench and running off with it.

I have made over a dozen knives this week with moose, sambar and red deer stag handles and she has decided that this is the greatest stuff since roast beef.

aw, if it was my dog, I'd end up giving her a scrap no matter what it cost.

hehehe and hope that the dog didnt get a taste for the stuff:barf:
no thanks dogs has to learn how to be a good shop pal
i still can t find a way to keep the house pet from eating my dam sponges every time i walk away
she kniows it pisses me off cause she does it and then runns off the rest the day just being a bitch i guess
that or doggie crack is now sponge loaded with sanding grit and steel from hand sanding

Get in touch with a local farrier. Ask him if he can give you some hoof trimmings. My family's dogs used to love them, and since my dad was a farrier, there were always plenty of them lying around.

I WOULDN'T do that if I were you :) My dogs try to eat hoof trimmings every time the farrier is out. Then later that night they puke up the peices. Smells terrible

I took an old Henkels knife and rehandled it with a deer jawbone once. It was laying on my work bench finished, looking all tribal and everything and a stray coon hound that adopted us decided she like it. I don't have any idea how long she chewed on it but it's my guess just long enough to figure out that it bit back :D I found the blade and what was left of the handle laying in the yard with a little blood on it.

She has all the scrap antler she wants but there seems to be something irresistable about a scale or a finished knife before it is polished. Elk seems to be the antler of choice.
